33rd Edition of Mahana Salon Du Tourisme is well attended in Lyon ...

The 33rd Edition of Mahana Salon Du Tourisme was held in Lyon, France from 15th to 17th February 2013. The promotional travel event was attended by John Hughes of Randwick B&B in Ballyshannon. The opening Hours of the fair was from 10.00 -19.00 each day. The Mahana Salon Du Tourisme is a very important holiday fair in Lyon, being the third largest city in France with a population of over 2 million people.

Salon du Tourisme Lyon France

The format of the event had changed slightly since B&B Ireland last attended in 2011. Tourism Ireland were not present at this particular promotion, however Severine Lecart from the Tourism Ireland office in Paris was in attendance to help exhibitors set up their stands. B&B Ireland was located in what was termed as ?Le Village des Chambres D?Hotes et Gites? ?a section of the fair dedicated to the promotion of the B&B experience within France. This was the first time it had been done in Mahana Lyon. ?Overall a very large venue comprised of one large hall with more then 330 exhibitors.

More then 330 Exhibitors and 27.012 visitors met during the 3 Days. Friday was a working day, but 33% of the visitors attended the fair on Friday an increase of 9% on the same day last year. The press covered the event before and during the show. 45 journalists attended the press conference and the number grew by 24% on last year. Sunday was a very positive day at the event with lots of requests for information about Ireland on Sunday. The B&B Ireland brochures were in demand all weekend and by the end of the event, very few brochures were left behind.

B&B Ireland Salon du Tourisme Lyon

Tourism Ireland provided B&B Ireland with a booklet where the visitor could request further information. This information would then be posted to them after the event. Each exhibitor was asked to give a 10 minute presentation to the press on their product in French. John Hughes provided the interview representing B&B Ireland and providing a wonderful insight into the B&B experience in Ireland. He was also interviewed by a reporter and film crew at the stand with a questions and answers on Ireland in general.

Overall the fair was well attended on each of the days.? B&B Ireland distributed several hundred copies of the B&B Ireland brochure during this fair. ?The majority of calls to the stand were from visitors who have been to Ireland, and were very familiar with the B&B product and liked the B&B product. Many visitors intended returning to Ireland in the near future. Each visitor was encouraged to take a Brochure and Mr. Hughes explained that the brochure is the main comprehensive list of Bed and Breakfasts throughout all of Ireland. As this is the main travel fair in Lyon, it is important that B&B Ireland has a presence at the event. The B&B product is well received in France and our website is fully translated into French making it even easier for French visitors to choose www.bandbireland.com/fr

Good Riddance, Google Reader

googreadershutdown_616Google Reader turned into a zombie a long time ago and it’s good that Google finally killed it. For years, Google Reader has been sitting on Google’s servers without any appreciable updates. Sure, it got a bit of a facelift in 2011, but it only lost functionality since Google decided to rip out its social features in an effort to drive people to Google+. Its core features hadn’t changed for years, its overall design wasn’t really up to snuff anymore and even after eight years on the market, it would still often take hours before some feeds finally updated. I can’t help but think that a lot of the current outpouring of support for Google Reader is more about nostalgia than anything else. A couple of years ago, ‘shares’ on Google Reader were the equivalent of today’s Facebook Likes and Twitter retweets. It was the hot new way to measure how popular a story was, and a bunch of services ranked stories accordingly. Displaying the number of subscribers to your RSS feed was a point of pride for bloggers. But even then, Google Reader was mostly a tool for information junkies. It never caught on with mainstream users who were barely able to figure out how to subscribe to a feed. As Google Reader inventor Chris Wetherell noted in a post bemoaning the lack of updates to the service in 2011, however, that “market totally exists and is weirdly under-served (and is possibly affluent).” Google – especially under the leadership of Larry Page – simply decided that going after small markets wasn’t in its best interest, so Reader was left to die. For mainstream users, Flipboard, Zite, Pulse and all the other news-reading apps now represent a far superior solution (and they are all mobile-first, while Google Reader never got a chance to do something innovative on mobile at all). And that’s okay. The total dominance of Google Reader meant that nobody else was really trying to improve these “river of news” tools that we information junkies love so much because they give us a relatively unfiltered view of what’s happening. Newsblur, a Y Combinator-backed company, probably got the closest to replicating the old Google Reader when it launched last year (including the “share” feature and comments), but it barely reached a thousand paying users until the Reader announcement last week (now it has almost 3,500 paying users over 11,500

New China premier pledges strong ties with U.S.

BEIJING (AP) ? China's government is committed to strong relations with the U.S. and sees a rosy outlook for trade and investment between the sides, newly appointed Premier Li Keqiang said Sunday in his first news conference in his new role.

Despite their differences, conflict between the world's biggest and second-largest economies is not inevitable as long as they respect each other's major concerns and manage their differences, Li said.

China's new leaders "attach great importance" to relations that meet the "fundamental interests of people in both countries and serves the global trend of peace and development," Li told reporters at the traditional premier's news conference that follows the close of the annual legislative session

Two-way trade hit almost $500 billion last year, although disputes linger over Chinese trade practices, opposition to Chinese investment in the U.S. and complaints over alleged Chinese computer hacking.

Asked about recent allegations that China's military was behind massive hacking attacks on U.S. companies and government entities, Li reiterated Beijing's statements that China is a major target of global hackers and opposes all such criminal activity.

"I think we should not make groundless accusations against each other but spend more time doing practical things that will contribute to cybersecurity," he said.

Li was appointed premier last week with primary responsibility for running the Chinese economy.
