Pakistan 'Day of Love' - World News - MSNBC

Hundreds protest against an anti-Islam film in Pakistan by setting a cinema on fire on a day the Pakistani government has called for peaceful demonstrations. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 1:10 p.m. ET: ISLAMABAD, Pakistan --?Protests by tens of thousands of Pakistanis infuriated by an anti-Islam film descended into deadly violence on Friday, with police firing tear gas and live ammunition in an attempt to subdue rioters who hurled rocks and set fire to buildings in some cities.

NBC News reported that 12 people died in Karachi with another three dead in Peshawar during the protests. More than 100 people were injured.

Friday had been declared a national holiday by Pakistan's government so people could rally against the video.

There were also protests in at least half a dozen other countries, with American flags and effigies of President Barack Obama burned.

Mohammad Amir, a driver for a Pakistani television station, was the first to die in Pakistan.

He was killed when bullets hit his vehicle in the northwest city of Peshawar, said Kashif Mahmood, a reporter for ARY TV who was also sitting in the car at the time.

The TV channel showed footage of Amir at the hospital as doctors tried to save him. It also showed the windshield of the vehicle, shattered by several gunshots.?Police could not immediately be reached for comment about the death of Amir.

In Karachi, armed protesters among a group of 15,000 fired on police, killing one and wounding another, police officer Ahmad Hassan said. The crowd also burned two cinemas and a bank, he said.?

The film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad has sparked unrest in many parts of the Muslim world over the past 10 days.?A United Nations official said prior to Friday's deaths that about 30 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, had been killed in the violence.

Much of the anger has been directed at the U.S. government even though the film was privately produced in the U.S. and American officials have criticized it for insulting Muslims.

Slain ambassador's mom: 'He was trying to do something much bigger'

Western diplomatic missions throughout the Muslim world tightened security, with some closing down on expectation of big protests after Friday prayers.?Cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad published in a French magazine on Wednesday were expected to compound the anger.

French officials have ordered extra security around the country and at its embassies around the world after a satirical magazine published cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad. ?NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports from Paris.

Pakistan's government had encouraged people to protest peacefully Friday, which it described as the "Day of Love for the Prophet Muhammad."

"An attack upon the Holy Prophet is an attack on the whole 1.5 billion Muslims. Therefore, this is something unacceptable," Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said in a speech to politicians and religious leaders.

Akbar Saeed Farooqi, spokesman for a religious organization that helped organize demonstrations, said, "our heart is crying bloody tears. We can bear everything but disrespect to our Prophet and Quran," he added.

Crowds of angry protesters showed up in Kabul, Afghanistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The violent uprising followed a deadly weekend marking the deaths of eight International Security Assistance Force members. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

Several hundred protesters ransacked the two cinemas in Peshawar and set them ablaze.?A similar number of protesters also torched a toll booth on the outskirts of the capital, Islamabad. Police fired tear gas at the angry crowds in both cities.

Analysis: 'Manufactured outrage' behind Muslim protests

On Thursday in Islamabad, about 1,000 stone-throwing protesters had clashed with police as they tried to force their way to the U.S. Embassy.

At the consulate where four Americans died security consisted of one U.S. regional security officer and a local militia. Ambassador Chris Stevens often had little personal security detail. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan has been running television advertisements, one featuring Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying the government had nothing to do with the film.

    Protests in the Muslim world
Protests went off peacefully in the Arab world, where last week several embassies were attacked and the U.S. envoy to Libya was killed in an initial burst of unrest over the film.

A few dozen Egyptians protested near the French embassy in Cairo, but were kept away from the premises by police deployed in large numbers to avoid a repeat of violence at the U.S. embassy last week.

In Indonesia, which has?the world's biggest Muslim population,?the U.S. and French embassies were closed in Jakarta Friday.

Lebanon's Hezbollah-run al-Manar television showed thousands of people waving Lebanese and yellow Hezbollah flags as they marched past the Roman ruins of Baalbek and shouted slogans such as "Death to America, death to those who insult the Prophet".

Diplomatic missions in the Afghan capital, Kabul, were on lockdown.

Police in Kabul said they had been in contact with religious and community leaders to try to prevent violence.

"There are some angry demonstrators who will encourage people to violence," senior police officer Mohammad Zahir told Reuters. "There will also be Taliban influence in demonstrations too and they may attack the U.S. and other embassies."

Protests in Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif only attracted a few hundred people and no violence was reported, but a cleric told one crowd: "If you kill Americans, it's legal and allowable."

Pakistan added to growing no-go list for Americans

The cartoons in France's Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly have provoked relatively little street anger, although about 100 Iranians demonstrated outside the French Embassy in Tehran.

    Arshad Arbab / EPA

Images of daily life, political pursuits, religious rites and deadly violence.

In Yemen, Western embassies in the capital Sanaa tightened security, fearing the cartoons could lead to more unrest after crowds attacked the U.S. mission there last week over the anti-Islam film.

In Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring revolts, the Islamist-led government decreed a ban on protests planned on Friday against the cartoons.?

An Islamist activist called for attacks in France to avenge the perceived insult to Islam by the "slaves of the cross."

In a statement before her meeting with Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem, Clinton said she and the president are continuing to monitor events around the world closely in the wake of the attacks and protests on American diplomatic posts.

"We've taken a number of steps around the world to augment security and to protect our personnel at diplomatic posts," Clinton said.? In Tunisia, where the embassy and an American school were damaged, Clinton said the government is helping secure the locations and she stressed the importance of bringing those responsible for the assault to justice.

    /

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

About 10,000 Islamists gathered in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, after Friday prayers, chanting slogans and burning U.S. and French flags and an effigy of Obama.

In Libya, where militias that helped overthrow Moammar Gadhafi still wield much power, the foreign minister offered a further apology for U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens' death to visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns on Thursday.

Around 30,000 Libyans marched through the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday in an unprecedented protest to demand the disbanding of powerful militias in the wake of last week's attack.

NBC News' Fakhar Rehman, Catherine Chomiak and Andy Eckardt,?The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

UNCITRAL works on electronic transferable records (and identity ...

You may recall that UNCITRAL's Working Group on Electronic Commerce meets at the end of October to continue work on electronic transferable records (like bills of lading, warehouse receipts, negotiable instruments etc) ? documents that have to be unique to keep their value.

The Secretariat has just published the main working papers for the meeting ? WP 118 and WP.118/Add1. They are on the UNCITRAL site in the working group document section under E-commerce (of course): http://www.uncitral.org/uncitral/en/commission/working_groups/4Electronic_Commerce.html.

The US, Spain and Colombia have also submitted their overview of the issues, as WP.119.

In addition, the ABA's task force on identity management have submitted a paper on that topic, as WP.120. Not only can ID management be a separate topic, but it relates directly to authentication questions that arise with electronic transferable records. One has to be very confident of the identity of the person who controls the record and the person to whom it is being transferred, to make the system work.

I suppose that some of you won't want to sit down and read all these documents from start to finish in order to comment, even with the knowledge that members of some national delegations may see the comments. Your chance to influence the course of international law!

In that case, I could direct your attention to a matter dealt with at paragraphs 42 ? 49 of WP.118/Add.1 about how one can transfer paper documents to electronic form, and vice versa, without losing their reliability and thus their legal effect. Does the description sound right to you? Do your clients have an interest in ever doing that?

More later, perhaps, but feel free to comment on anything in the papers. I have raised before whether the need for the project had been demonstrated. WP.119 addresses that question directly.

Most tangible items depreciate in value the second you buy them. For example, new cars loose value when driven off the lot. Computers are outdated the next week and cell phones the next day. However, if you take the correct steps in building a home, homes can appreciate in value soon after the home is built. For many people, their home is their largest investment; it can also become their largest financial asset. New homes are typically worth more than existing homes. Therefore, by building a new house one can maximize their investment by choosing the right lot location, picking the right home features, and building at the right time.Choosing the right building lot location can add thousands of dollars to the future appreciation of your home. All cities have community locations that are more desirable than others. This is why some parts of town are more costly to live in than others. If, for example, there is a new anticipated community breaking ground for residential building lots, it would be advantageous to be one of the first homes built in the neighborhood. Generally, as the neighborhood grows, the lot values increase which gives the first homes built instant equity. In addition to building in the up and coming subdivisions, it is also important to not build a house that is substantially larger or more expensive than other homes in the neighborhood. Also, avoid building near busy roads, telephone lines, and on odd shaped lots. When building a home, it is important to furnish the home with appropriate products and materials. Many people will add expensive home furnishings thinking that an appraiser will value their home higher. In actuality, appraisers do not give as much credit as they should for upgraded products in a home. Appraisers simply look at the square footage and compare the homes? pricing to similar homes in the neighborhood. However, it is good to build a home to appeal to future buyers, but this does not mean going over the top. For most buyers, granite counters, stainless steal appliances, nice cabinetry, and solid wood floors will suffice.Timing is everything when trying to gain a solid equity position in a home. In todays down economy, the real estate market is slow, this creates a perfect opportunity to build a home knowing that the real estate market will soon correct itself and provide for a great opportunity for home appreciation, for those who bought at the bottom of the market. On the contrary, it is a poor time to build when the market has been strong for many years. With many years of strong real estate comes a slowdown that must be avoided by new home owners.Unlike many investments, the building of a new home can allow for future appreciation on your investment. Many of the wealthiest Americans gained their riches through real estate. For most people, a home is their largest investment and should likewise be their largest financial assets. If one chooses the right building lot location, the right home features, and builds at the correct time, he or she can maximize their investment by building a new home. EEOC Sues Food Retailer for Firing Bipolar Worker - The BLT: The ...

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sued food retailer King Soopers Inc. for firing a worker who is bipolar, alleging that the company violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Employment discrimination suits involving mental illnesses are relatively rare and by no means easy to win, but the EEOC earlier this year scored a major victory in one of the first cases involving bipolar disorder to go to trial.

The EEOC hailed the suit against Cottonwood Financial Ltd. in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington as a breakthrough, and regional agency attorney William Tamayo in a news release warned that, "Employers acting on outdated myths and fears about disabilities need to know that the EEOC will not shy away from taking ADA cases to trial to bring them into the 21st century."

It seems the agency is making good on the threat. On September 18, the EEOC announced the suit in Denver federal court against Dillon Companies, which does business in Colorado as King Soopers.

The EEOC alleged that the company refused to accommodate and unlawfully fired Kelly Ferris, a receptionist at its headquarters, because of her bipolar condition.

Ferris was hired in 2003 and worked for five years before she took medical leave, explaining that she needed the time to manage a flare-up in her disability. While the company had a medical leave policy of 18 months, Ferris was allegedly fired after five months for failing to report to work.

"Bipolar disorder and other psychiatric conditions have long been misunderstood in society," said EEOC Phoenix Regional Attorney Mary Jo O'Neill in a news release. "Employees who have bipolar disorder are frequently subject to unfair stereotypes about their ability to work. That's why the EEOC filed this lawsuit."

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder affects about 5.7 million adult Americans in a given year. It's one of the top 10 leading causes of disabilities.

The suit is not King Soopers first run-in with the EEOC. In December 2011, the supermarket chain agreed to pay $80,000 for discriminating against a mentally challenged worker, who was allegedly taunted and bullied by co-workers and eventually fired.

Aspart of the settlement, King Soopers agreed to "provide training to all of its supervisors and managers about the ADA and how to properly interact with employees with special needs," according to the EEOC.

Turner, 30, of Suwanee, Ga., was booked into the Gwinnett County jail in metro Atlanta just after 5 a.m. Turner spent barely two hours behind bars before he was released on $2,179 bond, jail records showed.

A Gwinnett County police officer pulled over Turner's black Audi R8 on Interstate 85 northeast of Atlanta after clocking the car at 97 mph ? 32 mph over the speed limit, said Cpl. Edwin Ritter, a police spokesman.

"The officer made contact with the driver who identified himself as 30-year-old Michael Turner of the Atlanta Falcons," Ritter said in a news release. "The officer could smell an odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the driver and proceeded to conduct a DUI investigation."

Ritter said the officer arrested Turner after a field sobriety test. The police incident report was not immediately available.

Hours before his arrest, Turner and the Falcons celebrated a 27-21 home victory over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

"First and foremost, any time a player sheds negatively on our football team and on our organization, we are very disappointed," coach Mike Smith said. "This is a legal matter, and it's very well-defined how we have to proceed with it through the league, and we'll let this process run its course."

Tuesday was the players' day off, but Smith said he met in his office with Turner.

"He knows that we are disappointed in the decisions that he made after the ballgame last night," Smith said.

Smith declined to say whether Turner will be suspended when the Falcons (2-0) visit San Diego (2-0) on Sunday.

"There are certain parameters that are set in place by the collective bargaining agreement and the NFL and the NFLPA," Smith said. "Those guidelines will be followed in terms of what we can and cannot do.

"If there's going to be any internal discipline, that discipline will stay internally. That will be conversations that we have with Michael and the conversations that we've already had this morning."

Turner scored the Falcons' first touchdown against Denver after jumping over a pileup of Atlanta and Broncos linemen in the first quarter. It was Turner's 51st touchdown for the Falcons, a franchise record.

Turner, who played at Northern Illinois during his college career, joined the Falcons in 2008 after four seasons with the San Diego Chargers. Last year, he rushed for 1,340 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Australia's Fortescue wins debt breather, shares soar

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Fortescue Metals Group , one-third owned by billionaire founder Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest, has lined up $4.5 billion in debt and is in talks to sell stakes in some of its assets, as the world's No.4 iron ore miner moves swiftly to shore up funding to cope with a slump in prices.

The debt facility, fully underwritten by Credit Suisse and JPMorgan , will be used to pay off $3.6 billion in existing bank facilities, a lease facility and export credit facility - giving Fortescue some $900 million extra headroom as the first repayment is not due until November 2015.

The deal also waives earnings-based covenants, a key factor for the company whose earnings have been squeezed by weak iron ore prices.

Fortescue shares, halted last week after reports that the company was seeking waivers on its debt covenants, jumped as much as 21 percent on Tuesday on relief the Perth-based miner won't have to sell new shares or sell assets at knockdown prices to raise cash.

"This has been a sledgehammer to crush an ant," Chief Executive Nev Power told reporters. "But we wanted to do that to provide absolute certainty about the state of our financial facilities and our balance sheet."

Analysts said the deal was good news for shareholders as it simplifies Fortescue's debt, provides breathing space in a weak iron ore market, and lowers the overall cost of funding as the bank facilities are now secured by Fortescue's assets.

"It is a sledgehammer approach and should be regarded as a very positive development for this company," said Ben Lyons, an investment analyst at ATI Asset Management, which owns Fortescue shares. "We have comprehensively ruled out the prospect of an equity raising today, which is a significant positive for equity holders."

Fortescue shares jumped to a 2-week high of A$3.62 - on course for their biggest one-day gain in more than three years.

Fortescue said it was evaluating approaches from a range of firms to partner in its assets, but said it was under no pressure from lenders to sell any stakes. "We are not under any time pressure or, as you can see, any liquidity pressure to be forced into these asset sales," Power told reporters.

He declined to say which assets the company had received interest in or identify the interested parties, but said Fortescue was not in talks to sell its key infrastructure assets, which include a rail line and port worth more than $2 billion combined.

The company said it was not talking to Chinese steelmaker Baoshan Iron & Steel Co (Baosteel) about selling any asset stakes. Baosteel is a partner in Fortescue's magnetite iron ore assets, one of the "non-core" assets in which Fortescue has said it may sell a stake.

    NO DILUTION

Fortescue did not disclose the interest rate on its new facility, but said it would probably be less than the 7 percent margin it pays on its notes. It also said the fees charged by JPMorgan and Credit Suisse were "incredibly competitive".

Earlier this month, Fortescue slammed the brakes on plans to triple its iron ore capacity, cutting $1.6 billion in planned capital spending this year, axing hundreds of jobs and selling a power station to preserve cash.

The moves shocked investors, coming less than a week after Power had said the company was comfortable with its funding, was on track with its expansion, and was confident iron ore prices recovering.

Forrest has been fighting not to have his stake diluted in a company he built from scratch. He has spent close to $180 million in recent months to take his holding to 32.8 percent.

Asked repeatedly if Forrest had pressured the company to avoid a share sale to raise funds, Power said only that Fortescue would never take any option off the table, but that it saw no need for an equity raising at this point.

    PRICES RECOVERING

The price of iron ore <.io62-cni> traded as high as $180 a metric ton a year ago, but plummeted to a 3-year low of $86 earlier this month as demand in China shrinks. On Monday, benchmark iron ore with 62 percent iron content had rallied to $105.10 a metric ton, according to data provider Steel Index.

Fortescue, which produces only iron ore and effectively has a single customer, China, said on Tuesday it expected iron ore prices to continue edging higher toward $120 a metric ton, as Chinese steel mills step up production.

Australia, the world's biggest exporter of iron ore, revised down its revenue forecasts for the steelmaking ingredient by a fifth on Tuesday, adding to signs that the industry is losing steam as China's slowdown drives down prices.

Students return to Louisiana State University after bomb scare

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Students at Louisiana State University were allowed to return to their dorms late on Monday after police swept residential halls on the campus following a bomb threat.

Dining and recreational facilities also were reopened, LSU said in a statement.

"LSU and law enforcement personnel continue to methodically search the campus and have been returning buildings to normal operations throughout the evening," the statement said.

"There are fewer than 20 buildings left to search and LSU will continue to update the campus community as information becomes available," it said.

The university was evacuated following a telephoned threat to the East Baton Rouge Parish emergency center at 10:32 a.m. (1532 GMT) and the center relayed the information to campus police, said university spokesman Ernie Ballard.

University Chancellor William Jenkins made the decision to evacuate the campus, and LSU alerted students, faculty and staff via text message at about 11:30 a.m. (1630 GMT), Ballard said.

Ballard could not say how many of LSU's 29,000 students and 4,700 faculty and staff were on campus at the time of the threat.

As word of the threat spread, public school officials placed three nearby elementary schools and one high school on lockdown, meaning no one was allowed to enter or leave, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

Public schools spokeswoman Sonya Gordon said students would be allowed to leave at their regular times, unless there was confirmation that a threat exists.

On Friday bomb threats were phoned in to the University of Texas at Austin and North Dakota State University, prompting evacuations of both campuses. Students returned to those campuses hours later after police investigated and found no bombs.

Louisiana State Police were talking to their counterparts in other areas where university bomb threats were reported last week to determine whether there were similarities, Marie said.

Hello Peg.? Thanks for writing back to me.? Let me tell you the 1st year after John passed I was dreading it too.? In fact I made quite the big deal about it.? I realize now I shouldn't have, it would have been easier on me and my family, pretty sure of that!? This year, it felt so much more peaceful, I guess that means I have accepted this loss of his physical presence.? Not his spiritual presence though, cause he is still here with me.

    ?

Yes, I totally understand Peg.? John and I were married 39 years and that was his biggest wish, he wanted a motorcycle, Gold Wing type too, for us.? Years before he had broken his back and he wasn't really strong enough to ride a big bike but he was stubborn!?We would have been doing just what you and your hubby did Peg!

    ?

I think it is wonderful and amazing when you meet someone and you can spontaneously share and relate, it's just meant to be at that moment in time.

    ?

Yes, please think about releasing a balloon, it was a simple yet gracious and beautiful thing, watching the balloon fly high into the sky, just knowing it was closer to him felt so right.

Ex-Boyfriend Living in Attic Freaks Out North Carolina Woman

When the nails started falling out of her bedroom ceiling one night, Tracy, a Rock Hill, N.C., mother of five, thought it might be an animal up in the attic.

She thought wrong. It was her ex-boyfriend.

After her older son went up to investigate, the dude came down from the attic without any explanation and left with a smile before police could arrive.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the man had been living in the attic by the heating unit for about two weeks, having just been released from jail.

"He had packed all the old coats and jackets into the heating unit and was sleeping in the heating unit," said Tracy, who did not reveal her last name.

There were also large plastic cups containing human waste. Tracy's nephew told the Observer that he could spy on the woman through an air vent.

"It's got me flabbergasted," she told the newspaper after discovering the unwanted guest. "How can you look at someone through an air vent?"

A fair question. Another mystery is how the man got in the attic in the first place because the only access is through the lower level of the house.

She and the man dated over a decade ago, but they remained in touch; he helped her install some doors in 2011, the last time she saw him.

"I want him to be charged with it," she told the Observer. "It could be somebody else he does the same thing to, but she might not be so lucky."
