James Zogby: Egypt's Elections: Lessons and the Way Forward

Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) Chair Farouk Sultan's nearly interminable announcement of the outcome of Egypt's presidential election tested his nation's patience. Twitter commentary on his speech's almost mind-numbing detail, while hilarious, masked an underlying nervousness that this was but an effort to wear everyone down preparing the ground for the announcement that the winner was, in fact, General Ahmed Shafik. The speech was an over-wrought defense of the work of the Court. It was also a testy rebuttal of earlier attacks delivered by the Muslim Brotherhood. And it was boring. At one point, I thought that decades from now, we might forget who won the election, but we would never forget Farouk Sultan's speech.

In hindsight, I believe there might have been a logic to Sultan's endless detail. This was, after all, Egypt's first truly democratically contested presidential election. And so his report of incorrect counts, faulty ballots, etc, could be seen as a reminder of the fact that in a democracy elections are always messy affairs. As the old adage goes "elections are like sausage-making. You don't want to see how they're made, but they taste delicious." We don't see the mess in a landslide, but in close contests, the errors born of petty (and not so petty) corruption and human error become all too evident--remember Florida's "hanging chads" in 2000, or Ohio's Diebold machine malfunctions in 2004.

This was, by any measure, a close contest. Here, too, the SCC's report was a useful reminder of the deep, nationwide divisions in the Egyptian electorate. In the end, one-half of eligible Egyptians voted, and little more than one-half of them chose Mohammed Morsi to lead them. And it is important to note that not all of Morsi's votes came from supporters of the Brotherhood--many came from those who were quite simply voting against Shafik and the military. So too, many of those who voted for Shafik, were in fact casting a vote against the Brotherhood.

Even those wary of a Muslim Brotherhood win, must acknowledge that history has been made in this openly competitive contest. President-elect Morsi will now occupy the seat once held by Nasser, Sadat, and Mubarak--but with a difference. If this is to work, there can be no new Pharaoh, nor will the Generals be able to exercise unfettered control--by themselves, or through a surrogate. Morsi now has a mandate to govern. But he would be wise to proceed with caution.

There are two essential components to making a democracy work--both involving a recognition of the reality of divisions in society. The losing side, despite their bitter disappointment, must accept the legitimacy of the outcome, and the winning side must accept the reality and legitimate rights of the losing side.

These are the hard tests of democracy and real challenges lay ahead. If we look closely at this election, and indeed everything that has transpired since February of 2011, we can see that Egypt's nascent democracy is still a work in progress. There are clearly two poles in the contest for power--and an emergent third pole in the making.

On the one side there is the Muslim Brotherhood, a powerful national movement, an effective provider of services, and a now proven vote-getter. On the other side is the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces (SCAF) and the elements of Egyptian society they represent. They too have demonstrated that they have supporters and have the capacity to organize. The revolutionary youth remain a potent force, but have recognized their electoral limitations and have embarked on a five-year organizing plan.

In any case, the shape of Egypt's new democracy will be determined by the interplay between these poles--with no one group being able to claim it represents all Egyptians, or even all those who voted for them in the last election (democracy being a fickle mistress). It is advisable, therefore, that both sides approach this next stage with a degree of humility and that neither side over-reach--as they unfortunately have in the recent past.

The Muslim Brotherhood set off alarm bells when they tried to exercise too much control, too soon, in Parliament and in the selection of the body that was to write the new Constitution. They then compounded their over-reach when they broke their earlier pledge not to field a presidential candidate and were seen as trying to control everything. This was seen as a step too far. One party control can be a problem in an established and divided democracy, like the United States. How much more so, in an emergent democracy.

For its part, the SCAF created deep concern when, in reaction to the Brotherhood's over-reach, they suspended Parliament and then issued the Supplementary Constitutional Decrees stripping the powers of the presidency and establishing their role as final arbiters of the Constitution.

At this point after the election, the two main established poles of power in Egypt are what they have been all along--the Brotherhood and the SCAF. The military will seek to maintain as much control as they can, while President Morsi will make a determined effort to wrest as much control as he can. The two groupings will continue to test each other, and the interplay will determine whether or not Egypt moves forward. The test of wills that will now occur will shape the future of Egypt's democracy.

But the real test for the new President and the SCAF will be their ability to perform. The public will have limited patience with their contest for power. At the end of the day our polls show that a majority of Egyptians could care less about which group rules. Uppermost on their minds are jobs, improved health care, better education, and a government that can deliver services without corruption. This is the real work of democracy, and, in this context, the election and its outcome mark not the end of a process, but its beginning.

RIM cutting 5,000 jobs

TORONTO ? Research In Motion Limited (TSX:RIM) said Thursday that it is cutting 5,000 jobs as it restructures its operations and that the launch of its much anticipated BlackBerry 10 smartphone will not happen until the beginning of next year.

The launch of the new smartphones, seen as key to the recovery of the company, had been expected later this year and will now miss the important holiday shopping season.

"I am not satisfied with these results and continue to work aggressively with all areas of the organization and the board to implement meaningful changes to address the challenges," said chief executive Thorsten Heins in a release.

"Our top priority going forward is the successful launch of our first BlackBerry 10 device, which we now anticipate will occur in the first quarter of calendar 2013."

The company announced the cuts and delays as it reported a loss of $518 million or 99 cents per share for its latest quarter. The loss compared with a profit of $695 million or $1.33 per share a year ago.

Revenue for the three months fell to $2.81 billion from $4.91 billion.

In its outlook, the company said it expects the next several quarters to continue to be very challenging for its business.

RIM said it expects to report an operating loss in the second quarter of fiscal 2013, as RIM continues to invest in marketing programs and continues to work through the transition to BlackBerry 10.

When I Don't Want to Be Superwoman?3 Jobs My Husband Has to ...

I?m not one who?s big on predetermined roles in relationships but after 5 years of marriage (and 7 years of dating) I?ve come to realize that there are some things that my husband HAS to do. There?s no negotiation, bartering or exchanging?these are jobs I need him to do or else I?m a nervous wreck.

The jobs I?m talking about have nothing to do with wedding vows but are smaller jobs that keep our marriage together on a ?day to day? basis. There?s no discounting how important these smaller things are because when I?ve tried to ?handle? them?things have gone down hill quickly!

As you read these jobs some will laugh, while others will shake their head for me not being that ?independent? woman?that?s fine, I can admit that even women like myself can?t do it all.

1. Our household?s automobile repairs, needs and potential accidents. I am notorious for not taking care of my cars. I forget to get oil changes, I run into objects and I?ve even been known to even forget to put gas in my car. All of these situations have lead me into situations where someone?s mad and I?m an emotional wreck so when we got married, my husband agreed to take over ALL of our automobile needs. All I would have to do is fill my car up with gas and drive it.

Just last week a sensor went off in my car indicating that something was wrong with one of my tires. I reluctantly went and put more air in it but it still stayed on. By the time I got home I was highly irritated so I gave my husband the keys and asked him to handle it. There was no way I was going to go into a car repair shop and listen to some man explain some car ?mumbo jumbo? with me looking at him like he was speaking Spanish. Knowing I was frustrated he took my car and made the light go off. I did not ask him what he did I just knew that now I could drive my car without a sensor coming on. For years he?s tried to convince me to learn how to change a tire, change my oil but I refuse to listen. Isn?t that what?s he and AAA are for?

2. Fixing major repairs around our house. I?m not talking about minor repairs (clogged toilets, drains, etc) but major repairs that come ?out of nowhere?. There?s something about either a major appliance breaking or going out that can send me hovering in a corner. I start to calculate the cost and time and all reason goes out the window!

Last winter the heat went out in the downstairs of our house in the dead of winter. We had just came home from a weekend in Florida and when we walked in, I felt like I was still outside. I called the Home Warranty company and like always they began to use all kind of legal language to basically tell me that appliance wasn?t covered by our policy. I was cold, angry and about to start yelling so I did what I knew was best. I handed the phone to my husband and took the kids upstairs while he dealt with them. Less than 24 hours later we were sitting nice and toasty in some heat?courtesy of my husband?s negotiating skills.
There are other crisis around the house that come up and there is nothing more comforting when my husband says, ?Let me handle it.? I swear I feel like a thousand pounds are lifted off my shoulders and those words allow me relax instead of going into a panic. Knowing that at times he may be at work or not able to take care of it, I know how to handle most repairs but it just makes me relaxed knowing most of the time I do not have to.

3. If an unwanted animal is found on our property?I go into paranoid mode. I hate anything that crawls or scurries especially snakes, mice, squirrels. So imagine how hysterical I was when I found out a squirrel had gotten into our attic! Panicked by thoughts of waking up with a squirrel on my chest, I had to pack up the kids and leave our house while my husband found a way to get out of our house. Everyone thought I was being dramatic but I literally would think about it and go into a frenzy. My husband agreed to ?take care of it? and within 24 hours he called and told me he had trapped the squirrel and it was okay for us to come home!

There are other things my husband does that he doesn?t get enough credit for. If we hear a noise in the middle of the night, my husband goes downstairs to investigate the noise (usually called by some random object falling) and calm our fears. If something comes up at work that has me on the edge he calms me down before I go into a crisis mode. I can?t always be independent so I?m grateful to have a husband that is strong when I?m weak!

In the end, when my husband handles these ?crises? it allows me to relax and take care of all of the motherly/wifely duties that I have to do.

BMWK family, what are some jobs you expect your spouse to do?

Headaches and Botox Injections ? Leeel Ementary Directory

Most people are unenlightened that the use of Botox for the arresting of migraine headaches came about purely aside accident. It all happened because of the reject of Botox close tractable surgeons. Patients undergoing plastic surgery, who were also experiencing headaches, noticed that their injections of Botox helped with their migraine headaches.

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin erexin-v, is a neurotoxin (a toxin that attacks tenacity cells). It was originally approved via the FDA looking for use in conditions where hyperactivity of muscles was an underlying problem of related robustness and medical conditions. The theory is that Botox weakens or paralyzes muscles past inhibiting the emancipating of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is an ester of choline that is brown study to play an momentous position in the broadcasting of insolence impulses at synapses and myoneural (muscle-nerve) junctions. Through inhibiting the disenthral of acetylcholine the nerves cannot creator a muscle contraction, event relaxing the muscle. Botox is administered near being in a beeline injected into the affected muscles.

There are differing theories as to how Botox works to knock out migraine headaches, but the true reasoning remains unclear. Joke theory is that muscle worry and spasms are a produce of migraines and close eliminating the muscle nervousness with an injection of Botox it make also eliminate the create of the headaches. If prone Botox formerly the headache begins it is tenable to eliminate the migraine in the vanguard it metrical starts.

When muscles convulsion it can drive someone crazy nerves that innervate them. When these nerves send signals to the brain in an increased amount it causes pain and mayhap headaches. Botox may affect these bottle cells, inhibiting their transmission, causing a lessening of the knowledge of pain. Numberless researches suppose that migraine headaches are a fruit of sore of blood vessels. Anyhow, muscle tension may also leeway an important position in the agent of headaches.

When researchers assay a medication's effectiveness they usually test it through a double-blind study. This means that some patients are affirmed the medication being tested while others are set a placebo. A placebo is an inactive resources, such as sugar, that is given in recall of the medication that is being evaluated. Some tests be dressed been performed that did not incorporate double-blind studies, but showed that Botox could obstruct migraine headaches. One double-blind deliberate over involving Botox and headaches showed no more than a lesser positive effect.

Initial studies may not be enduring shown the extensive effectiveness of Botox as far as something the forbidding of headaches. The injections were not placed in the to be expected locations of the ass suffering, but in areas normally injected during supple surgery. In future studies, using larger doses and injecting into more particular localities instead of the problem labour, the results were improved. These tests were with migraine headaches. Howsoever, with traction headaches, or muscle traction headaches, the studies include shown improved results. This is to be expected proper to the weakening or paralyzing nature of Botox on the muscles that are experiencing tension.

When being injected with Botox for the forbidding of headaches it may suffer several weeks to come the injection takes effect. To this reason it is predominantly necessary to procure it injected no more often than once every 3 months or so. People that have Botox administered into the treatment of headaches typically desideratum it injected every few months. If there is too large of an gap between injections the headaches may be experienced nearby the patient.

However, the matter arises yon the safety of these time-honoured injections of a neurotoxin. Since 1989, when it was first used as a pain in the neck treatment, it has appeared to be justly safe. Most migraine headache medications are charmed orally and done end up in the blood stream. Because of this common symptoms of migraine headache medication disposition be dizziness and drowsiness among other symptoms. Since Botox is injected directly into the muscle fabric and does not listen to concentrating into the blood pattern as does the characteristic trouble drug there are fewer side effects. Most commonly, the only side effects of injecting this neurotoxin is grief in the size of injection pro a two of days or drooping of the eyelids for a only one days.

Studies are restful being performed on this medication and as hitherto the FDA has not approved it for the treatment of headaches. Though, physicians do decree it to their patients and if you ruminate over you are a applicant to utilize it you should examine it with your doctor. If you do not respond to other headache medications it may be something to talk with your physician about. As the studies continue the effects and safeness issues involving this medication should adorn come of more clear.

BT unites Openzone and Fon as a single WiFi hotspot service in the UK

BT unites Openzone and Fon as a single WiFi hotspot service for the UKJust when you were finally beginning to understand the difference between Openzone and Fon, British operator BT has decided to merge them into a single hotspot service called BT Wi-fi -- creating what it claims is the "world's largest wi-fi community." Access already comes free and unlimited with home and business broadband connections, so there's "no need to pay for 3G or a dongle" so long as you're in a relatively densely populated area. The re-branding should have little impact on how you use the service, except that the old network names will gradually be replaced, but then a bit of unification often has unexpected benefits.

But shareholders are already raising doubts about his ability to revive the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant. (AP Photo/Koji Sasahara)

(AP) ? The record 9,000 shareholders that packed Sony's annual meeting was no cause for celebration. After four years of losses and a halving of the share price, some angry investors doubt even a new CEO can pull the entertainment and electronics giant out of its slump.

The questions for management at a Tokyo convention hall this week were familiar ones, but only growing harsher. How is Sony Corp. going to regain its past glory? Is Sony finished? When is the red ink ever going to stop?

One man got up and began shouting. One by one, shareholders demanded to know why management didn't have more fresh faces, asked if the quality of Sony products was dropping, and even wondered whether Sony faced the risk of total collapse.

Once an icon of Japan Inc. with its portable Walkman music player and Trinitron TV, Sony reported the worst loss in its 66-year corporate history for the business year ended March with red ink of 457 billion yen ($5.7 billion). Profitability was battered by factors outside Sony's control such as last year's tsunami disaster in northeastern Japan, flooding in Thailand, the global economic slowdown and a soaring yen.

But most critically, Sony stumbled in the face of powerful, often cheaper, rivals such as South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., which dominates the global TV market. Sony has lost money for eight straight years in its TV business. Sony's glamor image is fading next to Apple Inc.'s iPod, iPhone and iPad, now bigger hits not only globally but also in Sony's Japanese home market, displaying the kind of ingenuity that was once prized as Sony's.

"We take the problem Sony's electronics business is facing very seriously, and we feel a sense of crisis," said Kazuo Hirai, the former head of Sony's game division who has taken over as CEO and president from Howard Stringer.

Decades ago, Sony co-founder Akio Morita was praised as a pioneer in unifying entertainment with technology to deliver dazzling fun gadgets such as the Walkman. He was a hero, helping fix Japan from wartime devastation, and catapulting a nation's technological wizardry to the global stage. Steve Jobs often sung the praises of Sony.

The company seemed to mirror and exemplify Japan's own rise as an economic and manufacturing power. Then something started going wrong. Critics often point to Sony's miscalculation of the strength of its digital music players over the last decade as a telling sign it had lost its way. Although Sony had developed digital music players early on, it failed to woo users by sticking to an unpopular proprietary format and not working on compatibility with the widespread MP3 format.

Now Sony's repeated promises of a revival have worn thin and are met with skepticism.

Stringer, who stepped down as CEO in April, pleaded with investors to support Hirai to carry out initiatives under the slogan of "One Sony." It's a strategy of removing barriers between the Tokyo-based manufacturer's sprawling divisions that span electronics, movies, music, banking and games so they all work better together.

But as soon as he stopped speaking, one stockholder asked why Stringer, who had hand-picked Hirai as his replacement, was staying on as chairman when Sony's performance had been so dismal under his seven-year tenure.

Hirai is promising to focus on image technology exemplified in sensors, broadcasting equipment and digital cameras to bring back Sony, but it faces competition from Samsung there as well.

"Japan excels in that core technology," Osamu Kumamoto, director at Asahi Electronics Co. of Japan, which offers image and robotics services, said at a recent manufacturing convention in Tokyo. "But Samsung is very advanced, too."

Hirai is also banking on games, the sector he knows best, having led Sony's U.S. game operations since 2006.

Sony has long faced tough competition from Nintendo Co. and Microsoft Corp. which makes the popular PlayStation machine. But the popularity of the iPhone and other devices that also offer games means Sony will increasingly be threatened by a host of electronics makers.

Still, Hirai departed from the line of his predecessors and didn't stress Sony's prowess in TVs. He only promised to stop the red ink.

Under Hirai, Sony has ended its joint venture in liquid crystal displays for TVs with Samsung to boost profitability. Sony fell behind in flat panel TVs and invested in a Samsung panel factory in 2004, to ensure a steady supply for LCD TVs.

Koichiro Hagiwara, senior analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Center, said Hirai might be able to make a difference because of his understanding of entertainment and gadgetry.

"People have said the long promised synergy between software and hardware is a ghost that no one has ever seen," said Hagiwara. "But if anyone can make it real, it's Hirai."

Hirai is also promising to strengthen Sony's smartphone offerings, taking full control over its joint venture with Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson.

He has already said the company will cut 10,000 jobs, or about 6 percent of its global workforce. The job cuts come on top of a couple of rounds of layoffs under Stringer.

Hirai declined to detail upcoming products, saying that must be kept secret to stay competitive. But he acknowledged cost cuts, regrouping and promises won't be enough to revive Sony.

"We need to make sure our customers are moved by our products. We need to pique their curiosity," he told shareholders. "I want our shareholders to feel that Sony has changed."

Sony shares have lost about half their value over the past year to trade recently at about 1,000 yen ($12).

The changes at Sony underline a bigger shift in Japanese electronics to expand into businesses that sell to other businesses, rather than consumers.

There is speculation Sony will tie up with Japan's scandal-tainted Olympus Corp., which boasts a strong medical equipment division. Hirai declined comment on Olympus, but reiterated Sony wants to strengthen its medical business.

Panasonic Corp., which also suffered record losses, is vowing to turn itself around by focusing on such "business-to-business" sectors, including solar panels and batteries for autos, although it's not exiting consumer electronics.

In a reversal of a historical rivalry made famous by the 1980s video format wars between Sony's Betamax vs. Panasonic's VHS, the two companies are joining forces to develop next-generation TV display technology called OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, panels, aiming for low-cost mass production by 2013.

Samsung is planning to start selling TVs with big OLED screens later this year. OLEDs use a different technology than liquid crystal displays and deliver very clear, vivid imagery. Sony was the first in the world to sell an OLED TV, with an 11-inch model in 2007, but it wasn't a strong seller, partly because of its small size and high price.

Despite Hirai's promises to revive Sony, Kazuo Bando, a Tokyo retailer who owns 5,000 Sony shares and was at the shareholders meeting, wasn't feeling too confident.

"The management has failed," he said. "I am worried. I lost a lot of money."

So essentially you can apply for your free credit report and within the first month if you cancel you will not be charged even a single penny. Yes, there prices have gone up by $4 per month in last few months. A thing to watch out for definitely.

Why should you know your credit score?

I really don?t like much about credit score services. I am comfortable seeing simulated (fake) score through credit sesame or credit karma. Nevertheless, it?s great to know your real credit score when you?re trying for a new home or car.? Getting your information in advance may give you an opportunity to correct any errors or resolve any negative bureau reporting.

GoFreeCredit is a company offering credit scores from each of the three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). Each bureau uses its own slightly different calculation to determine your credit score, and each may still differ further from the FICO score, the credit score used by most lenders to determine your risk profile and your interest rates. Even though there are some differences, the more numbers you have, the better understanding you can get of how the financial industry sees you.

With GoFreeCredit, you can receive scores from all three credit bureaus ? Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion when you enroll in Triple Score Complete program. This is a $19.95 per month service, but it?s free for 30 days. If you do not want to pay $19.95 and just want to know your current score and report, you must cancel before the 30 day trial period is over.

Even viewing your score an knowing what?s in there in your credit report is essentia and beneficial because of the following

  • Lower your interest rates
  • Get you instant loan approvals
  • Reduce or eliminate required down payments
  • Qualify to buy a house
  • Qualify to buy a car
  • Qualify to get a new credit card

Salient features of GoFreeCredit.com

  • Free Equifax Credit Score
  • Free 3-in-1 Credit Monitoring Trial with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion
  • Daily credit monitoring of your Equifax, Experian and TransUnion credit files and alerts to key changes
  • Free 30-day Trial Membership
  • $16.95 / per month Apply Now!

The Account creation process

When I created account, it did ask me for credit card for verification. Once you do that and answer a few past history question, they offered me a couple of extra services which I did not select. The page design is to trick a new customer in to accepting these new services which may not be free for 30 days, so, be watchful.

The credit card used for verification is charged if you do not cancel your membership within 30 days. I then went on creating my user id and password.

Once I was in he system, which didn?t take much time, there were three bureau credit scores and reports that were displayed. I did spend a lot of time looking at the report as I was looking it after a few months. Thankfully my score didn?t come down since i checked last and the report didn?t have a negative incident.

Helpful hints

To cancel your credit monitoring service, login to your account. Go to ?My Account? page and then search for ?cancel membership?. If may call their representative to cancel your account. You may not want to do that and continue receiving score updates.

Don?t just read your report, if any disputed information is found which you believe to be false, you have every right to file a claim, as per FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) law. Contact the credit reporting company(one of the three bureaus) and the information provider like loan or card provider, apartment association, etc.

We give GoFreeCredit.com a ?apply? rating but, once you know your score you may cancel your membership.

For cleaner laundry, add diamonds

1 hr.

Laundry detergent laced with teeny, tiny diamonds removes fats and dirt at lower temperatures than the blingless variety, according to new research.

The nanodiamonds -- pieces of carbon less than ten thousandths the diameter of a human hair ? were added powder detergent to see if they could scrub out grime that typically requires hot water cycles to remove.

?We found that the 5 nanometer diamonds changed the way detergents behaved at 25 degrees centigrade (77 degrees Fahrenheit), doubling the amount of fat removed,? Andrew Marsh, a chemist at the University of Warwick in England, said in a news release.?

?Even at temperatures as low as 15 degrees centigrade (59 degrees F), otherwise hard-to-remove fat could be solubilized from a test surface.?

Without the diamonds, water temperatures between 60 and 90 C (140 and 194 F) are required to get such stains out of laundry.?

The lower temperature water afforded by the bling, the team notes, should help people save on their energy bills. Of course, they may have to spend that savings on the pricier detergent.

The research appears in the journal Applied Materials and Interfaces.?

Science of slinkys explained with slow-mo video

10 hrs.

Dangle a slinky off the roof of a building until it is fully extended, then let go and notice something odd: The bottom will hover in mid-air long enough to make even the casual observer to go, ?huh?? Thankfully, scientists have taken it upon themselves to explain this strangeness.

And they?ve done it with the help of high-speed video so that we can watch the suspended, collapsing spring in super slow motion.

Mike Wheatland from Australia?s University of Sydney explains in the video below?that when you let go of the slinky at the top, ?there?s a finite time for that information (i.e. signal) about that change to get to the bottom of the slinky.??

Until the bottom of the slinky gets the message, it just hangs there oblivious to the change happening form above. Hence, the hovering effect.?

For a bit more technical explanation, check out the explanation at io9. You can also geek out to the physics of slinkys by reading this paper on arXiv by Bill Unruh, a physics professor at the University of British Columbia.

Of course, you can also stare at the slinky and let time slip away one collapsed coil at a time.

Curt Schilling: Money From Baseball Gone, Blames Gov. Chaffee For Scaring Off Investors

It's always intrigued me that people who are very successful in one area believe that particular success validates their judgment in every other area. Classic case in point: Curt Schilling. From what I read from insiders in the video game industry, he pretty much did everything wrong.

And now, of course, he blames the government for his own lack of business sense:

Curt Schilling told the Providence Journal today that he stands to lose all of his savings on a failing video game company called 38 Studios.

The company ? which Schilling founded and moved to Rhode Island in 2010 because of a $75 million loan guarantee ? fired its entire staff last week. It's effectively out of business, and now RI taxpayers are on the hook for $112 million, according to CNN.

Today, Schilling spoke publicly about the failing business for the first time ? blaming the government for refusing to give the company tax credits, claiming a video-game maker backed out of a deal with 38 Studios after public comments made by Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, and saying that he put everything he's ever saved into the company.

[...] But here's an excerpt that the AP pulled out:Schilling, 45, told the newspaper he stands to lose all the money he saved while playing baseball, and rejects criticism that he is seeking a public handout.

"I have done whatever I can do to create jobs and create a successful business, with my own income. Fifty million dollars, everything I've ever saved, has been put back into the economy. The $49 million from Rhode Island has been put back in the economy. I've never taken a penny and I've done nothing but create jobs and create economy. And so how does that translate into welfare baby? I've tried to do right by people."

Israel jittery after Brotherhood victory in Egypt

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood victory in Egyptian presidential elections, announced Sunday, has raised fears in Israel that its strategic 1979 peace agreement with its southern neighbor could be in danger.

In contrast, in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, ecstatic residents flocked into the streets, fired guns in the air and handed out candy in celebration.

Israel's peace agreement with Egypt, its first with an Arab country, is a cornerstone of Israeli security. The agreement ended decades of hostilities, with to five wars and thousands of deaths.

While relations have never been warm, Egypt has upheld the deal, keeping its bordering Sinai peninsula largely demilitarized, allowing the Israeli military to focus on other hostile borders with the Palestinians, Syria and Lebanon.

In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he respected the results of Egypt's democratic process and hoped the peace agreement would remain intact.

"Israel expects to continue cooperation with the Egyptian government on the basis of the peace agreement between the two countries, which is of interest to the two peoples and contributes to regional stability," he said.

With the Egyptian military still the ultimate power in Egypt, senior Israeli defense officials who maintain contacts with Egypt said Sunday that they do not expect any immediate changes in relations. Over the long term, they warned, the Brotherhood may seek to cancel the peace agreement. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a sensitive security assessment.

The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, is a pan-Arabic movement that favors creation of a Muslim state that encompasses the entire Middle East. It has never given up that goal, but as it gains official power in Egypt, winning parliamentary elections and now the presidency, it has indicated pragmatic willingness to accept the existence of Israel.

Although some Brotherhood leaders have said they will never meet with an Israeli official, they have been careful to say they would not cancel the treaty. Like many other Egyptians, they favor amendments ? primarily to allow more Egyptian troops into the Sinai. Israel has already permitted an increase of troops there, demanding that Egypt bring violent extremists under control.

Since longtime Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown last year, Israel has watched the security situation in the Sinai deteriorate into lawlessness. Armed gangs are believed to control wide swaths of territory, smugglers have helped thousands of African migrant workers sneak into Israel and various Arab militant groups, some believed to have ties to al-Qaida, operate freely.

Eli Shaked, a former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, said the Egyptians would "have a lot to lose" if they canceled the peace, including Western investment and billions of dollars in U.S. aid. Even so, he warned, the treaty was not safe.

In the Gaza Strip, tens of thousands of joyous Palestinians took to the streets across the territory after the result was announced.

Gunmen fired automatic weapons in the air, and mosque loudspeakers reverberated with prayers. Some revelers handed out candy on street corners.

The celebrations were marred when one person was killed and six others wounded by celebratory gunfire.

Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood's ascent to power in Egypt has raised hopes that Gaza's relations with its powerful southern neighbor will improve.

"Today is new era for us in Gaza. The days of suffering due to the Egyptian authorities are over, said Rawhi Talab, 51, a food store owner.

Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar told a rally in downtown Gaza that "the heart of Jerusalem has started to beat again," adding, "We are not asking Egypt to fight on our behalf." Hamas does not recognize Israel.

Mubarak collaborated with Israel in a blockade of Gaza. The blockade, first imposed after Hamas-linked gunmen captured an Israeli soldier in 2006, was tightened the following year when Hamas violently seized power in the seaside strip.

Israel said the blockade was needed to prevent arms shipments to Hamas. Under heavy international pressure, Israel lifted some limits two years ago and Egypt eased travel restrictions after Mubarak's ouster.

Morsi has not yet said what plans he has for dealing with Gaza, which shares a 15-kilometer (nine-mile) border with Egypt, which ruled Gaza from 1948 to 1967.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh phoned Morsi to congratulate him on becoming Egypt's first Islamist president. "This is a victory for all Arabs and Muslims, and this is God's promise to his believers," the Hamas leader said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, a secular leader who governs in the West Bank, also congratulated Morsi. "The president expressed his respect for the choice of the great Egyptian people," according to a statement from the official Wafa news agency.

The leaders of Kuwait and Bahrain sent cables to Morsi congratulating him, according to statements carried by their official news agencies.
